Hydrangea is a beautiful plant with large oval leaves that blooms in summer. Depending on the variety, its inflorescences can form a ball, tassel, or umbrella of various shades.

Unfortunately, many gardeners do not know what to do with plants when it gets cold, and what to do in this case.

In this article, OBOZ. UA will tell you about the peculiarities of caring for hydrangeas in January.

The best way to save hydrangeas from frost is to leave them alone

The best way to protect hydrangeas in January is simple: all you have to do is ignore them. They are dormant at this time of year, and if you prune them now, the plant will become more vulnerable.

Experts have this to say about this problem: "There are two main groups of hydrangeas that bloom on last year's growth and this year's growth. The first ones form their buds during the previous growing season, which falls in late summer or early fall. By pruning them in January, you risk cutting off the buds, which will lead to a lack of flowers throughout the year. Therefore, it is best to leave them alone until spring."

For hydrangeas on new growth, their buds are formed during the current growing season. This means that hydrangeas with new wood still have to grow their flowers. However, even here it is better to wait with pruning until late winter or early spring.
