The cost of car insurance has been drastically changed in Ukraine: what else is mentioned in the law

The sharp increase – by an average of 70-100% – in the cost of mandatory civil liability insurance policies for motor vehicle owners (auto insurance) in Ukraine is a result of the law that came into effect on January 1, 2025. The law also increases insurance payments: for car repairs – from UAH 160 thousand to UAH 250 thousand, and for treatment of victims of road accidents – from UAH 320 thousand to UAH 500 thousand.

In addition, the document cancels the deductible (the part of the funds not reimbursed by the insurance) in all contracts. It also makes it easier to receive insurance payments.

The fact is that direct settlement of losses by insurance companies is now mandatory. That is, after an accident, the driver will be able to contact his or her insurance company, not the culprit of the accident.

In addition, the restoration and reimbursement of the cost of the car will be calculated without taking into account wear and tear (i.e., to the state "as before the accident"). And insurance companies will independently organize repairs at authorized service stations, which will save drivers from having to solve this issue on their own.

Paper Green card policies have been equated with electronic ones. So now it is not necessary to print them out when crossing the border.

The conditions for beneficiaries – combatants, people with disabilities, etc. – have also changed. Now they also have to have compulsory car insurance, but they can buy it with a 50% discount.

How much does a compulsory motor insurance policy cost

In general, Interfax-Ukraine reported that since January 1, 2025, the cost of insurance policies has increased by an average of 70-100%. At the same time, there is no single price for a motor vehicle liability insurance policy – each company determines its own. For example, the market offers a price of UAH 2.2-5.6 thousand for cars with an engine capacity of up to 1,600 cc.

In another company, the cost of the policy varies from UAH 3.5 to 6 thousand, depending on several factors. In particular:

• age of the driver and the vehicle;
• type of car;
• region of registration.

Another company offers policies for UAH 500 for motorcycles. And 50 thousand UAH for buses registered in Kyiv.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, at the same time, Ukraine has allowed to settle road accidents without police involvement. However, only those that involved only two vehicles and did not cause damage to the life and health of individuals. To settle a claim, drivers need to submit a paper or electronic report of the accident to the insurer. At the same time, they must have a valid compulsory car insurance policy.
