For those who likes tension, the thriller genre is the best choice. The plots of these films keep you in suspense to the very end, guaranteeing vivid emotions. Horror films are meant to scare you with some kind of evil that needs to be destroyed or at least avoided, while thriller movies are unpredictable and create a special tension.

There are several types of thrillers: psychological, mystical, criminal, political, spy, science fiction, etc. Netflix has released a list of the best thrillers that guarantee maximum tension and incredible emotions.

Leave the World Behind

  • Subgenre: Apocalypse

It is based on the novel of the same name, published in 2020. It is a tense apocalyptic thriller. Amanda Sandford (Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) escape the hustle and bustle of the city to a luxurious house on the Long Island. But soon the wonderful vacation is interrupted when the owner of the house, D.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) arrive in the middle of the night, saying that a disaster has struck New York. Scott believes that this phenomenon may be a sign of something bigger, and the two families must learn to trust each other if they have any hope of surviving.

Fair Play

Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) are a pair of newly engaged financial analysts whose relationship is forbidden by their mutual employer, the hedge fund One Crest Capital. When Emily gets an unexpected promotion that Luke was expecting for himself, power plays begin to ruin their relationship. Only one person can get what they want even if it destroys their future together.

Reptile

In this intricate thriller, detective Tom Nichols (Benicio Del Toro) is involved in a murder investigation. A young real estate agent has been found dead. The deceased's boyfriend, Will Grady (Justin Timberlake), who is the head of a real estate empire, is completely devastated by the death of his beloved. But something goes wrong, and Nichols' investigation into the case leads to a tangled web of corruption.

The Call, 2020

Seo-yeon (Park Shin-hye) returns to her childhood home to visit her sick mother. When she arrives home, she plugs in an old phone and starts receiving calls from a grieving woman named Young-sook (Jeon Jong-seo). During their conversation, Seo-yeon realizes that Yeon-sook used to live in the same house, but 20 years ago. The two women become friends, learning about each other's lives over the phone and communicating through time. However, they make a small choice that will change their lives forever in their respective time frames.

Bird Box

  • Subgenre: Post-apocalypse

The film, based on the 2014 novel of the same name, tells the story of Malorie Hayes (Sandra Bullock) and her journey to survival. The world is full of terrifying entities that make everyone who looks at them commit suicide. Malori orders her two children (Vivien Lyra Blair and Julian Edwards) to float down a river blindfolded, but the plot quickly jumps back five years to a pregnant Malorie and her sister (Sarah Paulson). A news report warns that unexplained mass suicides are spreading. As Malorie fights for her life, she meets friends and enemies, including Tom (Trevante Rhodes), Olympia (Danielle Macdonald), Greg (BD Wong), Douglas (John Malkovich), Lucy (Rosa Salazar), and Felix (Machine Gun Kelly). And although none of them should open their eyes in the presence of monsters, you won't be able to look away.

Fractured

  • Subgenre: Psychological

Ray Monroe (Sam Worthington) and his wife Joan (Lily Rabe) are arguing on the way home, and their daughter Peri (Lucy Capri) is interrupting them from the backseat. The family stops at a gas station, and while her parents are distracted, Peri walks to a deserted construction site with a large open pit. Suddenly, a stray dog appears. Ray has found his daughter, but when he tries to scare the dog away by throwing a rock, Peri falls back into the pit. Trying to grab Peri, Ray also falls and hits his head. When he regains consciousness, he decides to take Peri to the hospital. Dr. Berthram (Stephen Tobolowsky) says that Peri needs a CT scan and sends mother and daughter downstairs for the procedure, while Ray is asked to stay in the waiting area, where he soon falls asleep. When Ray wakes up, his family still hasn't returned. Joan and Peri are gone, and the hospital has no record of them. At all.

Interceptor

  • Subgenre: Action, Drama

Nothing creates tension like nuclear weapons. Terrorists have stolen nuclear weapons from Russia and seized one of the US interceptor missile launch sites in Alaska. US Army Captain J. J. Collins (Elsa Pataky) has recently been transferred to the last of the two interceptor launch sites. Working in the command center alongside Lt. Col. Clark Marshall (Rhys Muldoon), Beaver Baker (Aaron Glenane) and Corporal Rahul Shah (Mayen Mehta), Collins is there when former military intelligence soldier Alexander Kessel (Luke Bracey) and his band of villains infiltrate the station. They have brought a manifesto to be broadcast on the Internet about the failures of the United States and instructions to immediately launch the captured warheads. Collins is the last line of defense for his country.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

  • Subgenre: Crime

In this reimagining of the award-winning series by Neil Cross and director Jamie Payne, Luther finds himself in prison for years of bending the rules in the name of justice. Thus begins a tangled game of cat-and-mouse between the detective and a cyber-killer (played by Andy Serkis) who mocks him.

Spiderhead

  • Subgenre: Sci-Fi, Psychological

Spiderhead tells the story of inmates Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzie (Jurnee Smollett), who seek to reduce their sentences by voluntarily testing various mood- and mind-altering chemicals. The inmates have their own rooms and are free to move around without guard supervision, as long as they report for daily drug tests. They are managed by the handsome Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) and his conscientious assistant Mark (Mark Paguio). However, nothing is as it seems in such places, and Jeff and Lizzie soon realize that something much more sinister than "love drugs" is being developed here.

The Platform

  • Subgenre: Sci-fi, Psychological 

This is a movie about a very scary buffet. One day, Goreng (Ivan Massagué) wakes up in a vertical self-government center known simply as The Pit, which is essentially a huge tower with many floors. His cellmate Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) explains that food is delivered to the residents of each floor via a platform from the top floor to the bottom, stopping for a fixed period of time at each level so that people can eat. But here's a catch - people on the lower levels can only eat what's left over from those above. Every month, people are randomly assigned to a new level.
