The erotic drama Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman as a businesswoman who falls in love with a young subordinate, is taking the movie charts by storm. The audience is confused by the story of forbidden love told in the movie, which can provoke a real scandal.

However, this is not the only such story embodied on the screen. Directors and screenwriters, together with actors, have explored the facets of feelings extensively and fruitfully and left a remarkable legacy. OBOZ.UA tells you which films best reveal the theme of forbidden love.

Brokeback Mountain

Ang Lee's film about the love of two courageous cowboys once made as much noise as Babygirl. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal incredibly sensually revealed the story of the relationship between two men who cannot be accepted by the traditional patriarchal society in which they live. The film won three Academy Awards in 2006, including Best Director and Adapted Screenplay.

Titanic

One of the most successful films in history explores another love taboo - the relationship between a wealthy girl and a poor boy. On a ship heading for certain destruction, poor artist Jack meets an engaged aristocrat Rose. Mutual trust develops into a sensual romance that is not destined to end happily.

West Side Story

The classic Broadway musical with music by Leonard Bernstein was adapted for the screen by Jerome Robbins in 1961 and recreated by Steven Spielberg in 2021. Both films tell the love story of members of two rival gangs. Tony, who belongs to the Rockets, meets the young and touching Maria, who is close to the Puerto Rican Sharks. Despite the differences in environment and race, the young people sincerely fall in love with each other. But will they be forgiven for this feeling? By the way, "West Side Story" is a reinterpretation of "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare.

The Danish Girl

The film is a biopic of the Danish artist Einar Wegener, the world's first man to undergo gender reassignment surgery. It all starts when his wife, Gerda, also an artist, asks him to pose for her in women's clothes. Gradually, Einar realizes that he is transgender. He decides to take a chance and agrees to undergo a groundbreaking surgery. All the while, Gerda stays by his side and protects his choice from an unfriendly society.

The Favourite

The historical biopic of Queen Anne Stuart (Olivia Colman) from director Yorgos Lanthimos explores the scandalous version of the monarch's life story. After burying her 17 children one by one, the queen gradually goes mad in her estate. Her vulnerable position is taken advantage of by the daring Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz), who falls in love with the queen and with her help improves her position at court. But one day a young aristocrat Abigail Mashem (Emma Stone) arrives at the royal castle. A forbidden liaison turns into a love triangle, in which true love seems to have no place.

The Bridges of Madison County

Italian Francesca has long lived in provincial Iowa. She is married, but lonely, and the life of a housewife is gradually absorbing her. One day, a photographer Robert Kincaid arrives in her town, commissioned to take pictures of local bridges for a magazine article. Francesca undertakes to show him the way. Two lonely and traumatized people gradually open up to each other. But will their love be able to overcome their circumstances? The movie stands out for the piercing duet of Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep.

Edward Scissorhands

Tim Burton's tragicomedy is considered a true masterpiece among romantic films. It tells the story of an impressionable young man, Edward, who was created by a talented inventor, but before he could complete it, he died. That is why the boy grows up with sharp scissors instead of hands. Edward's appearance frightens people, although his talent for cutting secures him a worthy place in the community. The boy's gentle soul is revealed by his neighbor Kim, and the characters start a relationship. But the society is still not ready to accept otherness, and Kim has to lie to protect her beloved.

The Graduate

The role of a college graduate, 21-year-old Ben Braddock, made a star out of young Dustin Hoffman. On the screen, he embodied a young man who, trying to find his place in the world, is torn between his feelings for the adult Mrs. Robinson and her young daughter Elaine. Hoffman so authentically embodied the pangs of love that the film became one of the highest-grossing films of the 1960s and was included in the list of the best films of all time.
