Experts from Paris Ticket & Tours conducted a study to determine the most romantic European capital. The main criterion was the number of marriage proposals made by lovers during a trip to the city last year.
Experts relied on popular hashtags on Instagram related to the proposal. As a result, it turned out that the top was not Paris, as one might have assumed, but the capital of Portugal, Lisbon.

The city on the Atlantic coast was mentioned in 1,049,944 tags, and the Portação do Sol observation deck and the Belém Tower with gardens were the most prominent places for a romantic moment. Silver in the ranking went to London – 1,026,528 hashtags, with the most romantic locations being the London Eye and Kyoto Garden.

Paris is in third place with 1,011,970 marks. The Eiffel Tower became the most popular place for a proposal, but lovers are also interested in a romantic cruise on the Seine. "It is surprising that Paris is not at the top of the list, given the well-known association of the capital with romance. This study demonstrates how social media trends can influence the rankings," commented Magdalena Petrusic, an expert on the list.
