Drivers in the police were not satisfied with the electric car Tesla Model Y. This is the most affordable crossover of the American manufacturer, which is liked by some civilian buyers. But police officers have been disappointed with it.

The Menlo Park police station in California, USA, tested several Tesla Model Y from January 2023 to January 2024. About it tells Autoevolution. The cars were tested in the usual operating mode to determine their suitability for service.

Among the benefits found were savings compared to familiar gasoline-powered patrol cars. Electricity was found to be cheaper than fuel. And because the battery and motors did not have to be repaired or replaced (which is very expensive in the case of EVs), maintenance costs were also saved.

But the problems turned out to be bigger than that. Low ground clearance is suitable only for flat roads on flat terrain. Uniformed patrolmen are uncomfortable in the cramped interior. In addition, Tesla, in the usual manner, itself decided at what moment to turn on certain functions.

Also - incorrect operation of the autopilot. All owners of these cars complain about it, but it is especially inconvenient for police officers on duty. And the control of many functions is "packed" in a multimedia system, which is difficult to understand, and it is inconvenient to do during the chase.

Many of the problems tried to solve with the company that deals with the conversion of electric cars into special vehicles. However, this is impossible because of the lack of support from Tesla.
