Tesla is lagging behind: the manufacturers of the most reliable cars in the world are named
A reliable car is not just about comfort and prestige, but also a guarantee of safety, time and money savings in the future. Some models can cause a lot of trouble in the long run, requiring constant investment in repairs. In the overall ranking, Tesla, which is very popular, ranks only 17th.
Consumer Reports is a reputable publication that annually publishes a rating of car reliability based on owner feedback and crash test results. This rating is an important tool for those planning to buy a new car, as it provides information on the durability and reliability of different models.
Subaru has risen to the top of the rankings, displacing Lexus and Toyota, which have held the top spot for many years.
Of the seven Subaru models, two - the Forester and Impreza - have reliability scores well above average, while the Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback and Ascent have above average and average scores.
"Subaru vehicles use many reliable components. This commonality means that when Subaru changes the design of a vehicle, the company can make fewer additional changes by carrying over reliable systems. This reduces the risk of new problems," commented Steven Elek, who oversees automotive data analytics at Consumer Reports.
The reliability scores of the updated Tacoma pickup, Tundra full-size pickup and bZ4X electric vehicle are below average, which worsened Toyota's overall position in the ranking. The only Subaru model with below-average reliability is the Solterra EV, a version of the Toyota bZ4X with the Subaru emblem.
Lexus and Toyota are ranked second and third, respectively. Four Lexus models were rated above average, and three were rated average. Toyota has four models that are rated well above average, seven that are above average, and five that are average.
Honda ranks fourth. Three models were rated above average, and seven received average scores. Acura, Honda's luxury sub-brand, rounds out the top five.
Consumer Reports brand ratings are based on the predicted reliability of models in each brand's lineup.
Experts did not have enough data to create a rating of Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Lucid, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Mitsubishi, Polestar, Porsche and Ram.
Every year, Consumer Reports surveys users about the problems they have encountered while using their cars over the past 12 months. Experts have collected data on more than 300,000 cars.
The faults range from so-called nuisances (brake squeaks or broken interior trim) to serious problems with engines, transmissions, batteries, etc.
Experts have published general conclusions on the latest analysis of the car market:
- Vehicles with internal combustion engines have 17 potential problem areas.
- Electric vehicles have up to 12 problem areas, including the electric motor, electric motor/hybrid battery, and charging systems.
- Hybrids have 19 potential problem areas: 17 with the internal combustion engine, as well as problems with electric motors and electric vehicle batteries.
- Plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) can experience all 20 problem areas: 17 from ICE-powered vehicles, as well as those related to electric motors, electric vehicle batteries, and electric vehicle charging.
Asian automakers continue to lead the way in reliability, with an overall average score of 57 for the region on a scale of 1 to 100. European automakers are in second place with 48 points, and Audi and BMW are among the 10 most reliable brands. US brands lag behind with an average score of 38. Buick received the highest score.
This year, among American brands, the Ford Mustang scored well above average, while the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Ford Escape scored above average. The Buick Encore GX and Envision, Cadillac XT5, Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 2500 and Trax, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Bronco, Bronco Sport, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y all received average scores.
The most reliable hybrid models - from Hyundai, Kia, Lexus and Toyota - received the highest scores in a number of categories. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, and Lexus NX Hybrid are among the most reliable models in this year's survey. Kia's Sorento Hybrid is the most reliable SUV with a three-row engine.
Ford's F-150 Hybrid is the least reliable model. The car has problems with the transmission and hybrid battery.
The Ford Escape Hybrid is also among the least reliable models, receiving significantly lower scores than the regular Escape, which this year has an above-average predicted reliability.
