Ukraine is facing the most acute shortage of teachers of English, math, and physics. There was a shortage of teachers in these disciplines even before February 24, 2022.

In total, about 4% of the positions are vacant. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Andrii Stashkiv during the telethon.

"About 4% of the total number of positions are vacant. First of all, these are positions that were in short supply even before the full-scale invasion and were not filled. These are teachers of English, math, physics, and other subjects. Objectively, the situation has not changed significantly during the full-scale invasion," the official said.

As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made an important announcement for teachers: starting in January, all school teachers will receive a fixed supplement of UAH 1,000, which will increase to UAH 2,000 in September 2025.

The day before, Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi said that it is difficult to retain good teachers in the Ukrainian education system because they realize that they can earn more. In addition, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the number of teachers has decreased by about 10 thousand.
