The calendar summer is behind us, but not everyone has had time to enjoy their vacation. Fortunately, there are still chances to bask in the warm sun without leaving Europe.

Thus, the capital of the southern Portuguese province of Algarve, Faro, still boasts a temperature of 25°C in September, Express writes. The city was included in the top 30 best places to relax outside the summer season according to The Telegraph. Visiting Faro outside of the summer months is a great way to avoid the crowds and enjoy the local delights.

In September, Faro boasts nine hours of daylight. The city also has a rich history that dates back to 418 AD, although most of the ancient buildings were destroyed when a strong earthquake hit the region in 1755.

There are many idyllic beaches to be found around the city's development. They are just a short ferry or bus ride away. You can sunbathe here until October, as this is one of the driest regions in Europe, which gives you the most sunshine.

The most accessible beach is Faro Island, which can be reached by bus from the city center. Its shoreline consists of a long strip of sand about 5 km long with beautiful warm blue water, ideal for swimming or playing.

However, there are plenty of interesting places to visit even without the opportunity to swim. The city's historical landmarks include the Bishop's Palace and the Town Hall, but by far the most interesting is the Faro Bone Chapel. The chapel has a very gloomy appearance, so it may not be suitable for the faint of heart. It was built in the 17th century from the bones of Carmelite monks. There are more than 1000 real human skulls in its walls and decor.

For those who do not like such exoticism, you can visit Faro Cathedral. This ancient monument was built in the 13th century. It was almost destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but fortunately, the cathedral was successfully rebuilt.

Art lovers will be interested in the most popular museum in the city – the Faro Municipal Museum, located in a monastery of the 16th century. It houses many Roman artifacts, and the museum's impressive treasures include busts of Roman emperors and a fantastic Roman mosaic discovered in 1926 near the local railway station. It was removed for protection in 1976.

Between the narrow streets and sidewalks of the city, you will find many cafes, restaurants, and bars in the Old Town where you can stop and taste the culinary delights of the region. The basis of the local cuisine is seafood. The Algarve region is also particularly famous for a dish called Dom Rodrigos. These wonderful sweets are made using fios de ovos (egg yolks cooked in syrup, or "angel hair"), cinnamon, and almonds.
