Netflix will release the series "Last Samurai Standing," combining the ideas of two popular projects, "Squid Game" and "Shogun." The historical action movie will tell the story of almost 300 Japanese warriors who gathered in one temple, competing for a cash prize of 100 billion yen (about 24 billion hryvnias).

The first shot of the upcoming film appeared on the company's official Instagram page. It is noted that the release of the series will take place in November 2025.

"Last Samurai Standing" tells the story of what would happen if these warriors – the toughest and best in Japan – suddenly became ordinary people and had to fight for their lives. Imagine that 'Shogun' is combined with 'Squid Game', said Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix's Head of Content in Japan, about the project.

What is known about the series

"Last Samurai Standing" is a Japanese series directed by Fujii Michihito, which is an adaptation of the manga (Japanese comic book) Ikusagami. The main roles in the project will be played by: Junichi Okada, Yoshioka Riho, Yuma Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Hiroshi Tamaki, Takayuki Yamada, Kairi Jo, Wataru Ichinose, Hideaki Ito, Yasushi Futikami, and Kazunari Ninomiya.

According to Netflix, the film is set in the late 19th century at Tenryu-ji temple in Kyoto. At nightfall, 292 skilled warriors gather, lured by the promise of a 100 billion yen prize. Among them is the protagonist of the series, Shujiro Saga, who enters a dangerous game with one goal: to save his sick wife and child.

"Squid Game," the idea for "Last Samurai Standing," has set a historical record for the Netflix streaming platform. Almost immediately after the premiere, the film topped the charts in 93 countries simultaneously, and the show's rating on the Rotten Tomatoes movie review service was 89/100%.

The "Shogun" series was equally successful. On the Rotten Tomatoes platform, it collected 99% of positive comments, and the project's rating on the Metacritic website, which collects reviews of music albums, video games, movies, and television shows, is 84 out of 100.
