The longest narrow-gauge railway in Europe
The narrow-gauge railway itself was built in the early 20th century. It is recognized as the longest in Europe.
It used to stretch to Pidhorodna, but in 2001 that part of the tracks was dismantled. The fact is that in the 1980s, an alternative route with a wide gauge was built from Haivoron to Pidhorodna.
At the beginning of the 20th century, such railroads in Ukraine were used mainly for freight transportation. Or they were built as temporary tracks and then dismantled. As a result, in 2000, only five narrow-gauge sections remained in Ukraine:
- "Carpathian Tram" (Vyhoda–Senychiv);
- "Polissia Tram (Antonivka–Zarichne);
- Borzhava narrow-gauge railway (Vynohradiv–Khmilnyk–Irshava);
- Kolochava narrow-gauge railway (village-museum in Kolochava)
- Haivoronska narrow-gauge railway (Rudnytsia–Holovanivsk).
As you know, in 60% of the world, the standard railroad gauge is 1,435 mm wide. These tracks are not as narrow as those built in Ukraine in the early 20th century.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, at the same time, Ukrzaliznytsia put into operation 9 new passenger cars – 5 compartment cars and 4 SV cars. They were built at the Kriukiv Carriage Works and became part of the branded train "Oberih" No. 63/64 Kharkiv – Lviv.
