So that it is lush and beautiful in summer: how to care for spathiphyllum in winter
Spathiphyllum is a fairly unpretentious houseplant, but it needs special care to continue to bloom in winter. The best place for the plant is the eastern or western windowsills. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves.
In winter, the plant needs less watering than in summer, so the topsoil should be sufficiently dry. Experts shared how to care for the spathiphyllum properly to ensure lush flowering.
Temperature
Temperature affects all processes in a plant: from the intensity of photosynthesis to the growth rate of roots. It is during the dormant period at a lower temperature that flower buds are laid.
Spathiphyllums have gorgeous white flowers during the growing season, which usually lasts from early spring to fall. This tropical plant comes from humid forests, so it needs certain temperature conditions for comfortable growth and abundant flowering.
During the period of active growth, the optimum temperature for spathiphyllum ranges from 20-25°C. These warm conditions promote the formation of flower buds.
With the onset of cold weather, the indicator should be reduced to 18-20°C, which will be a kind of signal for the plant about the beginning of the dormant period. The room temperature should not drop below 16°C, as cold can lead to leaf fall and plant death.
Spathiphyllum is very sensitive to drafts, so you should place the pot in a place protected from cold air.
Lighting
Another important element in promoting flowering is the environment, especially light.
Spathiphyllum prefers diffused light. Direct one can cause burns on the leaves, so the best place for the pot is the windowsill of an east or west window. On the south window, the plant should be shaded, and on the north window, it will need additional lightning.
Low light is perfect for the plant, but if you want it to bloom as soon as possible, provide it with more light. A sufficient amount of light stimulates the formation of flower buds and abundant flowering. Light is necessary for the process of photosynthesis, during which the plant produces organic substances for its growth.
Main signs that the spathiphyllum lacks light:
- pale, small, elongated leaves;
- the plant does not bloom;
- new shoots are weak.
Watering
Florists always recommend checking the soil before watering indoor plants. Do not allow the soil to dry out, but also avoid stagnant water. It is optimal to let the top layer of soil dry out by 1-2 cm before the next watering. Use settled room temperature water. Cold water can cause root diseases.
The frequency of watering depends on many factors: air temperature, humidity, pot size, and soil composition. In general, winter watering can be somewhat reduced.
