Snow Moon 2025: how to see the full moon with the 'Heart of the Lion' before Valentine's Day

This year's February full Snow Moon will appear in the sky before Valentine's Day on February 12. Interestingly, the full moon will have a royal companion, as it will rise together with a star nicknamed the "Heart of the Lion."

The second full moon in 2025 will be clearly visible at dusk at the time of rising on Wednesday, February 12. However, it will also be bright on February 11 and 13, LiveScience writes.

The brightest star in the constellation of Leo, Regulus, is located about 79 light-years from Earth and is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, astronomers say. It is called the ''Heart of the Lion'' for its location in the constellation, Sky&Telescope reports.

According to scientists, Regulus is one of the four "royal stars" of ancient Persian astronomy. Like the other three – Aldebaran in Taurus, Antares in Scorpius, and Fomalhaut in Piscis Austrinus – it appears close to the ecliptic, the trajectory of the Sun through the sky and the plane of the solar system.

This means that all four stars often appear near the moon and planets in the night sky and near the sun during the day, scientists explain.

The best way to see the full moon rise is to find a place on a hill or open area with a clear view of the eastern horizon, astrologers advise. The snowy beauty will be perfectly visible to the naked eye if the sky is clear.

The next full moon will be the Worm Moon, which will rise on March 14. Interestingly, in the evening it will enter the Earth's shadow, which will lead to a total lunar eclipse.
