Should you wash tires before storing: tips for drivers

Often, drivers often move tires to a storage place without properly washing and cleaning them.

Road dust contains a huge amount of chemical elements, some of which are dangerous and carcinogenic. It also contains residues of oil, antifreeze, and soot from burnt fuel. Worn-out tires, by the way, should not be used as a decorative element for flower beds or disposed of at places of mass accumulation of household waste.

All dirt should be thoroughly washed off before storing winter tires for a long time. Experts advise doing this at a car wash. To get rid of sometimes very small particles of dirt, you need to use a high-pressure apparatus.

If you decide to wash the tires yourself, use a car shampoo and a long-bristled brush. Remember that you should wash not only the rubber, but also the rims.

After washing, wipe the tires with a microfiber cloth. Use a different, clean cloth to wipe the rims, as the first one can absorb fine dust that can scratch the metal.

Experts do not recommend applying a protective coating to the rubber. Some products can even damage the top layer of the tires.

Never pack tires that are not completely dry in separate bags. Moisture can cause bacteria to grow rapidly. If possible, buy airtight bags with a zipper so that excess air can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.

When storing tires in a garage, avoid heat sources. Tires should also not be kept near solvents, lubricants, and substances that emit chemical vapors.
