Second-hand cars are brought to Ukraine en masse: top 10 most popular brands

Ukrainians continue to buy used cars – in May alone, almost 20 thousand used cars were imported into the country from abroad. Volkswagen Golf, Renault Megane, and Skoda Octavia are the most popular cars.

According to Ukravtoprom, 19.3 thousand used foreign cars were registered with Ukrainian license plates in May, up 26% from the same period last year. However, compared to the previous month, the figure decreased by 2%.

Almost half (49%) of the used cars imported from abroad are gasoline. Other types of engines are less popular:

• diesel – 23%;
• electric cars – 17%;
• cars with LPG – 6%;
• hybrids – 5%.

The average age of a second-hand car imported in May is 9 years, and Volkswagen remains the most popular brand. The top 10 most frequently purchased models are as follows:

• Volkswagen Golf – 1049 units;
• Renault Megane – 806;
• Skoda Octavia – 640;
• Volkswagen Passat – 569;
• Volkswagen Tiguan – 552;
• Nissan Leaf – 492;
• Nissan Rogue – 482;
• Audi Q5 – 457;
• Tesla Model 3 – 404;
• Audi A4 – 397.

In total, almost 95 thousand used cars were registered in Ukraine for the first time in five months of 2024. This is 36% more than in the same period last year.

Overall, in May, the Ukrainian used car market reached a record high over the past 10 years, in part due to simplified re-registration procedures and the impact of the new mobilization legislation. The number of first registrations and domestic resales of used cars amounted to 182.2 thousand units, which is 79.1% more than in May 2023.

OBOZ.UA also reported that in May, Ukrainians bought more than 5.5 thousand new passenger cars, almost every tenth of which were representatives of the Japanese brand Toyota. The RAV-4 model alone was bought more times than any other car brand in general.
