Seals relaxing and penguins hunting: an interesting picture was recorded near Vernadsky. Video
Ukrainian researchers recorded an interesting picture near the Akademik Vernadsky polar station. Several seals lie down on an ice floe and relax, while a flock of penguins desperately hunts around them.
Such travelers as the krill seals, who are comfortably perched on a piece of iceberg, can often be seen around the Vernadsky, polar explorers note under the video posted by Vitalii Kaminskyi on the National Antarctic Research Center's Facebook page. This picture is especially common in the Antarctic spring and summer when there is a lot of floating ice in the water.
"While some people are lazily resting on an ice floe, others are actively hunting in the ocean," the researchers from the Ukrainian scientific station note in the post.
At first glance, it may seem that seals use the ice block to travel. However, according to the polar explorers, icebergs are not a means of transportation for seals, but a convenient place to rest.
"Sometimes they can also rest on the shore, but floating ice is much more convenient because it is easier to get out and there is always access to water and, consequently, food," Ukrainian scientists say.
Seals relax on ice floes both alone and in groups – sometimes there can be several dozen of them. The Vernadsky polar explorers note that these krillers in the video "share their apartments" for four.
And while the krill seals are having a quiet hour, penguins are tirelessly foraging for food in the ocean around them. "You can see in the video a small flock of them jumping out of the water and diving again like dolphins," the researchers describe the video.
