Scientists were stunned by the trick of elephants in the Berlin zoo: one took a shower with a hose, and the other tried to make a nuisance of himself. Video

A funny video was captured in the Berlin Zoo. While Mary, an Asian elephant, was taking a shower, her friend Anchali started to interfere with her washing.

The elephant was not just making fun of her neighbor in the zoo but was deliberately trying to cut off her water supply. According to zoologists, these giants can handle the hose perfectly, because it looks like their trunk, The Guardian reports.

The video footage shows Mary washing her body with the hose, using her limbs and torso to direct the water where she needs it.

"Elephants spray themselves with water, dirt, or dust all the time. Studies show that more than 80% of observations of elephant behavior indicate that they use tools related to body care," said Lena Kaufmann, a scientist at Humbolt University.

However, the researcher emphasizes that Mary the elephant's use of a water hose is something special, as it is an "exceptionally sophisticated tool" that is flexible, has a special length, and has water flowing through it.

"Mary's very deft behavior with this water hose made us think that perhaps elephants have a somewhat intuitive understanding of hoses because of the similarity to their own trunks," Kaufmann added.

However, the reaction of Anchali the elephant to her friend's shower was even more surprising and delightful, The Sun writes. The mischievous elephant bent and clamped the hose, trying to stop the flow of water.

Experts believe that this was an example of Anchali's attempt to "sabotage" Mary's shower by blocking the water supply with her trunk.

"Anchali's behavior came as a surprise to us. No one thought she would be smart enough to pull off such a trick," said Humboldt University professor Michael Brecht.

According to scientists, elephants are trained not to step on hoses. Therefore, Anchali's behavior is a clear attempt to prevent Mary from taking a shower, experts say.
