Scientists name the best product to eat for breakfast to improve brain function

Scientists from the University of Reading have named a breakfast product that improves brain function. The study showed that the morning meal should contain 50 grams of walnuts.

Experts claim that consuming walnuts mixed with muesli and yogurt led to faster brain response during the day and better memory compared to an equivalent high-calorie breakfast without nuts. Interestingly, this tasty handful can have a significant impact on cognitive performance, especially in young people, writes UniversityOfReading.

The study involved 32 young adults aged 18-30 who ate a walnut-rich breakfast and one that did not contain this healthy treat.

The participants then performed various cognitive tests, with brain activity monitored for six hours after each breakfast.

"This study helps strengthen the case for walnuts as brain food. A handful of walnuts with breakfast could give young adults a mental edge when they need to perform at the top of their game," said Professor Claire Williams, who led the study from the University of Reading.

"It's particularly exciting that such a simple dietary addition could make a measurable difference to cognitive performance," she added.

The researchers' findings build on previous studies that show the cognitive impact of regular consumption of nuts, including walnuts. But this is the first study to examine the direct effects of walnuts on brain function in young adults over the course of a single day.

Brain activity recordings revealed changes in neural activity. Therefore, scientists suggest that walnuts can help the brain work more efficiently during complex mental tasks.

It is also interesting that the blood samples of the study participants showed positive changes in glucose and fatty acid levels, both factors that can affect brain function.

Experts suggest that a mixture of nutrients in walnuts, including omega-3 alpha-linolenic fatty acid, protein, and plant compounds called polyphenols, can boost cognitive performance too.
