The Great Sphinx is one of the most famous and ancient sculptures in the world, located on the banks of the Nile River in Giza, near Cairo. The Sphinx has the body of a lion and a human head, which suggests that only humans could have made such forms.
However, scientists from New York University have discovered new secrets about the origin of the famous sculpture. Arkeonews published the results of the study.
Scientists decided to recreate the conditions that existed about 4,500 years ago when the Sphinx was built to see if it could have been formed naturally. They used fluid dynamics and clay to simulate wind erosion.
The team created miniature, lion-like landforms from soft clay and another harder, less erosive material. They then washed these clay formations with a rapid stream of water to simulate the effects of wind erosion.
As a result of the study, the scientists noticed that the harder, less erodible material inside the clay miniatures became similar to a lion's head. Shapes such as the "neck," "paws," and arched "back" were also visible, but they developed later.
This suggests that the Great Sphinx may have originated as a natural landform, similar to rock formations that form from dust and sand.
This research is of great importance to geologists because it shows the possibilities of diverse rock compositions and how they are affected by erosion. Heterogeneous rocks can take on unexpected shapes due to erosion processes.
