Scandal: UEFA may suspend England from home Euro 2028
The European Union of Football Associations (UEFA) has warned the UK government that England risks being suspended from the European Championship, which it will co-host with Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in 2028. The reason was a draft law on a new supervisory body that should prevent wealthy clubs from joining breakaway leagues and protect clubs from financial mistakes, Reuters reports, citing local media.
In a letter to Culture Minister Lisa Nenda obtained by The Times and BBC, UEFA Secretary General Theodor Theodoridis said there should be "no state interference in the governance of football."
Theodoridis warns against plans to give the new regulator control over clubs from England's five top leagues, stressing that the independence of the sport is a "fundamental requirement."
"One of the areas of particular concern is one of the fundamental requirements of UEFA, which is that there should be no government interference in the governance of football. We have specific rules that protect against this to guarantee the autonomy of the sport and the fairness of sporting competitions; the highest sanction for violations is expulsion of the federation from UEFA and suspension of teams from competitions," Theodoridis wrote.
A representative of the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, in turn, said that "the Football Governance Bill will create a new independent football regulator that will bring fans back to the stadiums and address fundamental governance issues to ensure the sustainable development of English football for the benefit of club communities."
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Russian Football Union (RFU) does not expect the national team to return to international tournaments until 2028, when the World Cup qualifying tournament starts in Europe. The aggressor country's national team is preparing to miss the 2026 World Cup and Euro 2028.
