Russia's only aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" may not return to service: Defense Express gives reasons
The Russian Navy is in a critical condition, and the situation with the only aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" is a vivid example of this. The vessel has been undergoing repairs for many years, and the longer these works last, the less likely it is to return to service.
This was reported by Defense Express. Experts believe that the problem is not only in the technical condition of the ship but also in Russia's general inability to maintain its naval ambitions.
At the moment, Russian Su-33 fighters, which used to be part of the "Kuznetsov" air group, are used to escort Tu-95MS bombers, and the carrier itself cannot make any sorties.
Moreover, many of the pilots who were capable of taking off from its deck have already retired. The remaining ones need to undergo additional training to learn how to take off and land on the carrier again. This will take about a year.
For Russia, "Admiral Kuznetsov" is an important element of propaganda, as it is the only aircraft carrier in its fleet. That is why the Kremlin continues to spend large sums of money on its repairs. But even with these efforts, it is not certain that the ship will be operational again soon.
Russian media reported that the repairs were planned to be completed in 2024, but by this time, the pilots had not even begun training to land on the aircraft carrier due to problems with training grounds in the occupied Crimea.
Given all the problems, experts conclude that "Admiral Kuznetsov" will not return to service soon, and may not even come out of repair.
On January 10, the Eventin tanker carrying Russian oil lost control in the Baltic Sea and drifted for several hours. It ran aground near the German island of Rügen with 99,000 tons of Russian oil.
Eventin is carrying oil from Ust-Luga, Russia, to Port Said, Egypt, a port on the Suez Canal. This tanker belongs to the Russian "shadow fleet" that transports oil to circumvent sanctions.
