Russia wants to change borders with Lithuania and Finland

The aggressor country Russia has decided to move the borders with Finland and Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. The Russian Federation is going to declare part of the waters in the eastern Gulf of Finland, as well as near the cities of Baltiysk and Zelenogradsk in the Kaliningrad region, as its internal sea waters.

This is stated in a draft resolution of the Russian government, as cited by the Russian media. It is noted that the document was prepared by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

To move the maritime borders, Russia wants to change the geographical coordinates of the points that determine the position of the baselines from which the width of the territorial sea of the Russian Federation, as well as the adjacent zone off the coast and islands, is measured.

On the border with Finland, Russia wants to adjust the coordinates in the area of the islands of Jähi, Sommers, Åland, Rodsher, Maly Tyuters, Vigrund and near the northern entrance cape of the Narva River.

On the border with Lithuania, the area of the Curonian Spit in the Gulf of Gdansk, the areas of Cape Taran, the Cape south of Cape Taran, and the Baltic Spit were revised.

Russia wants to unilaterally move the border with Lithuania and Finland in the Baltic Sea: what is happening

The Russian Federation has stated that the current borders, established by a 1985 resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers, allegedly "do not fully correspond to the current geographical situation." According to the authors of the resolution to change the maritime borders, the points were recorded "according to small-scale nautical charts" which, in turn, are based on works from the mid-20th century, and this "does not allow to determine the outer limit of Russia's internal sea waters."

The document on the revision of the border has not yet been officially commented on by either the Finnish or Lithuanian Foreign Ministries. But it is interesting that it was presented for public discussion almost simultaneously with the start of Russian exercise on the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

According to the Russian media, on May 21, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the exercise started in the Southern Military District with the participation of Iskander systems and aircraft armed with Kinzhal missiles.

On May 6, Russia announced exercise of non-strategic nuclear forces. The occupiers stated that it is aimed at maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment to respond to "provocative statements and threats" by certain Western officials against the Russian Federation.

And on May 21, Russia announced the start of exercise on the use of tactical nuclear weapons. As part of this stage, the enemy will practice combat missions with Iskander air defense systems, aircraft, and Kinzhal missiles.
