Russia classified statistics revealing the scale of losses in the war against Ukraine
The Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation has classified statistics on the mortality of its citizens due to external causes. This includes data that previously gave Russians themselves at least some idea of their losses in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by The Moscow Times, an online publication based in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). It also cited a Russian demographer.
He noted that last Friday, July 12, Rosstat published a new compilation of the natural movement of the Russian population, which became two tables smaller. In particular, there was no data on the number of deaths from external causes of death by constituent entities of the Russian Federation and on mortality from external causes of death by constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
"And the tables of deaths by age and class of causes were replaced by the level of education, which means that they hide detailed data on external causes," said demographer Alexei Raksha.
The Russian publication writes that external causes in Rosstat's statistics include murders, suicides, and deaths in road accidents. After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, journalists used this data to estimate the losses of the Russian army in the war.
"According to the estimates of "Mediaport'' and the BBC, the losses of the Russian army amount to more than 58 thousand people. For their part, "Medusa" researchers estimated Russian losses at 120 thousand soldiers," the publication says.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale war (from February 24, 2022, to the present day), Russia has lost at least 562,510 servicemen in Ukraine (killed and wounded).
