Rumors are exaggerated: mother of NASA astronaut who has been in space for 9 months speaks about her daughter's condition
The mother of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who has been in space for 9 months, spoke about her daughter's condition. Bonnie Pandya admitted that it was "shocking" to hear about Sunita's long stay on the International Space Station (ISS), but she realized that "these things happen" when you are the best astronaut.
Pandya said that despite press reports of Sunita's deteriorating health, these are actually exaggerated rumors. Her daughter is feeling great and is "honored" to spend additional time on the ISS, DailyMail reports.
"I'm happy for my daughter. I have three children, and they are all doing something different. It's just a fantastic experience for her and us because she's doing something that not many people do," Bonnie Pandya told NewsNation.
Sunita's mother said she talks to her daughter "every couple of days". "I was just talking to her this morning," she said.
"Sunita is exercising two, two and a half hours every day," Bonnie Pandya emphasized. After all, NASA requires ISS astronauts to follow a rigorous training regimen to combat muscle and bone wasting.
Williams herself said that she gained muscle in space thanks to her exercise regimen. NASA has repeatedly stated that the two Starliner astronauts stranded in space are healthy and under the close supervision of the agency's doctors.
Williams told her mother that she is already looking forward to reuniting with her family and spending some time traveling when she finally returns to Earth.
As a reminder, Sunita Williams, 59, and Barry Wilmore, 62, landed on the ISS on June 6, 2024, and were supposed to stay there for several days. However, due to a malfunction, the Boeing Starliner spacecraft was unable to deliver them to Earth on time and they were stuck in space.
Despite the numerous postponements of the astronauts' return home, NASA still plans to send Williams and Wilmore back to Earth on March 19 or 20.
