Rome is a city that has been attracting tourists from all over the world for centuries with its historical monuments, architecture, and cultural heritage. This has a positive impact on the economy but also has many negative consequences.

Uncontrolled crowds, unacceptable behavior, litter – all of this negatively affects the state of the city and its historical monuments. Skift said that this is the reason why the local government wants to restrict access to one of the most popular locations in the world.

One of the main tourist gems and symbols of Rome is the Trevi Fountain. This majestic baroque building of the XVIII century has always been a popular place where tourists not only admire its beauty but also traditionally throw coins to make a wish. However, in recent years, the massive influx of people has not only created discomfort for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere of this historic site and residents but also threatened the preservation of the fountain itself.

Alessandro Onorato, deputy mayor of Rome for tourism, said that the problem of overcrowding has become more urgent than ever. This year may become the most visited in history, as the number of tourists may exceed 50 million. This is certainly positive for the economy, but it also creates great difficulties in managing tourist flows and preserving the quality of life of local residents.

Restricting access to the Trevi Fountain: what will change for tourists?

Since the number of tourists has reached unprecedented levels and some of them often behave in bad faith: jumping into the fountain, leaving garbage and disturbing other visitors, etc., the authorities have decided to introduce a reservation system for visiting the fountain. This will help to better control the flow of tourists and ensure the preservation of cultural heritage.

Tourists will be able to visit the fountain only by prior reservation, and the entrance fee will be a symbolic 2 euros. These funds will be used to pay for the staff to help manage the flow of people and ensure the protection of the monument. At the same time, Roman residents will be able to visit the fountain for free.

It is also planned to organize the flow of tourists so that they approach the fountain exclusively along specially designated routes, go down the stairs, and move in a certain direction to avoid chaos.
