"Quiet paradise": where to get away from the crowds in the Canary Islands

Alina MilsentNews

The Canary Islands are quite a popular vacation destination. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are crowded with tourists at any time of the year. But for those looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation, there is a real gem on the Spanish archipelago that is usually overlooked – the island of La Gomera.

La Gomera is one of the smallest islands of the Canary Islands, known for its picturesque nature, unique landscapes, and cultural heritage. The Express publication told why it is worth visiting this island.

La Gomera is famous for its amazing nature. It is home to the Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to unique laurel forests that have been preserved since ancient times. In addition, the island has many clean beaches, cliffs, and mountainous landscapes. Unlike its bustling neighbors, La Gomera is not overcrowded with tourists, but offers a slower pace of life, making it an ideal place to rejuvenate and relax in nature.

In March, temperatures in La Gomera rise to an average of 21 °C, offering almost 10 hours of sunshine every day.

There is a ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera, and the 50-minute boat trip is an unforgettable experience, as there is even a chance to see dolphins.

The summit of Alto de Garajonay is the highest point of La Gomera (1487 meters), offering breathtaking views of neighboring islands, including Tenerife with its majestic Teide volcano. The climb to the top is ideal for hikers and photographers.

The island has colorful villages that have preserved their authenticity. In Vallehermoso, you should visit the church of Santo Domingo, built in the XVII century, as well as the ethnographic museum, where you can learn more about the culture and traditions of the island.

Agulo is a small village often called the "pearl of La Gomera." Here you can enjoy magnificent views of the ocean and Tenerife.

Food lovers will be delighted with the delicious island dishes. It is worth trying "almogrote" – a rich cheese paste, or "miel de palma" – a sweet syrup made from palm trees, combined with fresh fish.

Among the most popular beaches:

  • Playa de Santiago is a quiet place to soak up the sun.
  • Playa de Vueltas is a calm black sand beach in the Valle Gran Rey.
  • Playa de La Caleta is an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling.

La Gomera is also suitable for outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to hiking, visitors can join sea tours to see dolphins and whales, paddle along the scenic coast in a kayak, or try their hand at rock climbing.
