Putin, Nicole Kidman's Babygirl and new Paddington: what to see in cinema this week

On January 16, a biopic from Polish director Patryk Vega about Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, created with the help of artificial intelligence, will be released in Ukraine, as well as a provocative erotic film starring Nicole Kidman.

In addition, the filmmakers will delight the audience with the long-awaited third part of the family movie about Paddington, and horror fans - with terrifying Wolf Man. OBOZ.UA will tell you about the new releases that can already be seen on the big screens.

Putin

Putin on the floor of a hospital room in a dirty diaper - this is how the film by Polish director Patryk Vega begins. The movie describes almost the entire life of the Russian dictator, from childhood to his fictional death. The director views Putin's life story as the rise of a thug and tries to uncover the reasons that brought him to power and allowed him to hold on to it for decades.

The director decided to use deepfake technology to maintain his face. To recreate it, they developed a unique technology for $3.5 million, which they worked on for almost two years. The film uses real footage of the bombing in Ukraine. Other filming locations include Syria, the United States, Jordan and Poland.

Patryk Vega is the highest-grossing director and producer in Poland. In total, he has created 19 feature films and 16 TV series. His most popular works touch upon the topic of organized crime. The budget of the new film is $15 million, the largest sum in Vega's career. He even turned to military officers, a former NATO official, and one of Putin's biographers, journalist Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich, to show the story as realistic as possible.

The screening rights have already been acquired by 64 countries. Interestingly, in Ukraine, the film was named Smert Putina (The Death of Putn) and will be released under this title only in Ukrainian theaters. This decision was proposed by the Ukrainian distributor of the film, Film.ua. The foreign title of the film is Putin.

Paddington in Peru

The third installment of the long-awaited seven-year-long adventures of Paddington, the Talking Bear. The main character, who lives with a foster family in London, learns that his favorite Aunt Lucy, who lives in Peru, has health problems. Paddington, along with the entire Brown family who adopted him, decides to go to her. However, they receive new news: Aunt Lucy has gone off alone into the wilds of the Amazonian jungle. The family sets out to find her.

Each of the characters in this adventure will be dealing with some of their own life problems - Mr. Brown at work and Mrs. Brown with her children Judy and Jonathan before they finally leave home. Paddington, meanwhile, seeks to find his family roots.

Babygirl

A spicy thriller by Dutch director Halina Reijn, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Nicole Kidman plays the main role in the film. Her character Romy demonstrates an ideal life only outwardly: the head of a huge corporation, a wonderful wife and mother. Her husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas) is a successful theater director. However, the couple's intimate life is not so rosy. The situation changes when Romy is hired to work with a young intern, Samuel, who is almost as old as her son. The daring young man immediately deciphers the boss's secret dreams and becomes her lover.

In an interview, director said that the idea for the film came to her after a conversation with a friend who admitted that she had never experienced orgasm with her husband in 25 years of marriage. Reijn also said that she drew inspiration from such films as Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, 9 1/2 Weeks, and Indecent Proposal. The film will be the first A-class movie labeled "for adults only" on Ukrainian screens in many years. Experts predict not only success at the box office, but also Oscar wins for the film.

Wolf Man

A chilling horror movie from visionary director Leigh Whannell. In the story, the protagonist Blake (Christopher Abbott) inherits an abandoned house in rural Oregon. He convinces his wife and daughter to move there from San Francisco to relax. However, the peace does not last long: upon arrival, an invisible animal attacks the family, forcing them to lock themselves in the house. Meanwhile, as night falls, Blake begins to behave very strangely, turning into something unrecognizable. His relatives will have to choose whether the creature in their house is more dangerous than the one wandering around outside.
