Preparing for next spring: what flowers to plant in August for early bloom
When spring comes, we always want the flowers in the garden to bloom as soon as possible. Thus, we should work on this in August.
Experienced gardeners recommend planting some flowers at this time so that they will bloom as soon as the season is right. Homes and Gardens has listed seven such flowers.
Snapdragon
These flowers can cope well with winter cold, so sowing hardy annuals in late August produces vigorous plants that will bloom in May. Sow the seeds indoors at 15-17 degrees and cover them with a little compost. Transplant the seedlings into the garden at least six weeks before the first frost. Then the plants will have time to take root well. When they are in bloom, remember to pick off the flowers that have already wilted to extend their flowering period.
Delphinium
The plant produces tall stems with inflorescences in shades of blue, pink, white and red. These flowers are also rich in nectar and are an excellent bait for bees and butterflies. Delphinium seeds can be sown outdoors in late August. The distance between the rows should be at least 25-30 cm. However, before doing so, put the seeds in the refrigerator for a week or two - this will help them germinate better. Also, don't forget to protect young plants from slugs.
Black cumin
This annual flower grows very quickly and sows well on its own, so this is a reason not to cut it off. The best time to sow it is in August. Sow the seeds in the ground in August or September, burying them by 1-1.5 cm and spacing them 15-20 cm apart. You can also scatter them randomly on the ground and lightly cover them with soil. In this case, the flower will overwinter well and bloom next May.
Honesty (Lunaria)
This is a very hardy biennial plant that will take root effectively if planted in August and will bloom well in the following season. And even when the petals of it fade, beautiful clusters of seed boxes will remain in the flowerbed, reminiscent of a full moon. Sow the seeds indoors in late summer, scattering them on a tray filled with compost. In about 7-10 days, you will see the first seedlings. Prick and plant them in separate pots. This will allow the plant to get stronger before winter. Plant the young seedlings in the yard at a distance of at least 30 cm in early fall so that they take root before winter.
Wild carrot
This biennial plant produces very beautiful openwork-like inflorescences that will become a real decoration of your garden. It looks best in flower beds with wild flowers. You can sow wild carrots in open ground in August. Or you can grow seedlings at home. The flower will take root well before the first cold weather.
Queen Anne's lace
To admire the white inflorescences of the plant, it is recommended to sow it in late August or early September. Then it will sprout earlier in the spring and be stronger. The plant has long tap roots, so it should be sown in deep pots, large modules, or directly into the soil to minimize any damage to this taproot. Plants sown indoors at the end of August can be transplanted outside in the fall or grown over the winter in large pots in a cold greenhouse and planted in the yard in the spring.
Calendula
An easy-to-grow annual flower that can produce flowers from May to July if you sow it in late summer. Plant calendula in the open ground where you want to grow it. Cover the seeds with soil or compost to 1.5 cm. If the air temperature is 20-22 degrees, it will germinate in 1-2 weeks. Hardy plants will overwinter and bloom in the spring.
