Photos of seals sleeping sweetly on ice floes near Vernadsky captivated the web

Inna VasilyukNews

Ukrainian researchers from the Akademik Vernadsky station once again delight nature lovers with incredible footage from the Antarctic. In continuation of the previous stories about seals resting on ice floes, the polar explorers showed more wonderful close-up photos of these hibernating seals, which immediately captivated the network.

Tetiana Bahlai, a biologist of the 29th UAE, took several pictures of the krill seals during a sea expedition. The researcher published the photos of polar relaxation on the National Antarctic Research Center's Facebook page.

"Winged seals are pagophiles, that is, ice lovers. Their whole life is closely connected with the ice: they rest, give birth, and feed their babies on it," the polar explorers said in their post.

Among the seals living near the Akademik Vernadsky station, Weddell seals and sea leopards are also ice lovers.

But since krill seals are the most numerous seals in the Antarctic, Ukrainian researchers see them riding on ice floes and iceberg fragments most often.

"We are looking at the photo and even a little jealous of how sweetly these fat guys are sleeping," Vernadsky biologists captioned the photo.

"Sleeping so sweetly on an ice floe... brrrr... and not cold at all!" one Facebook follower commented on the post.
