Photos of Antarctic glacier allegedly depicting an ominous human face go viral
In Antarctica, a glacier was spotted looking like an ominous human face. A Google Earth employee saw the "alien" first, and the photos he posted immediately went viral.
However, NASA reassures all supporters of alien theories. Scientists explain the creepy photos as a psychological phenomenon, writes DailyMail.
The satellite image from the South Pole, which already appeared online in 2019, was republished on the r/strangeearth Reddit page. This time, the photo caused a wave of questions, as many viewers saw a scary face with half-closed eyes, nose and mouth emerging from the snow.
Some social media users were quick to compare this face to Megatron, a character from the Transformers movie. And conspiracy theorists claim that the strange face is proof of a hidden civilization - possibly of alien origin - living under the Antarctic ice.
But all these assumptions are rejected by scientists. According to NASA, it is a psychological phenomenon that causes people to see faces in random objects where they are not, such as clouds, rocks, and unrelated objects, called pareidolia.
Scientists note that this is a form of apophenia, when people see patterns or connections in random, unrelated data. And they advise to take a closer look at the photo, which can be found on Google Maps at 72°00'36.0 "S 168°34'40.0 "E.
Similar discussions took place online some time age when NASA published a photo from Mars, in which many also saw the alien's eerie face. At the time, such claims were not supported by scientific evidence either.
