While many tourist cities are becoming less hospitable to tourists due to the excessive number of guests, some are still happy to see visitors. The pearl of Belgium has recently won the first place in a similar ranking.

According to the Express, Ghent won the palm in the World Wide Schooling list. This city is located in the heart of the country. It is quite small, but boasts canals, spectacular Gothic architecture, cobblestone streets, and many places to visit. And you'll hardly need to use public transportation - everything is close enough to get there on foot.

One of the attractions is Gravensteen Castle. Built in the 10th century, it is the only castle in Europe located in the city center. Throughout its history, it has served as a court, a prison, a torture site, a textile factory, and was even on the verge of being demolished.

Not far from the castle is another key attraction of Ghent - St. Bavon's Cathedral. Here you can admire the famous Ghent altar, created in the XV century.

The Pietershol district, located in the center of Ghent, is the backdrop for many Instagram photos. Its medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, and quiet canals create a unique atmosphere at any time of the year or day. It is home to many cafes, restaurants, independent shops and colorful facades.

In addition to its aesthetic beauty, Ghent boasts an attractive gastronomic culture. From frites (Belgian fries) to local chocolate and waffles, there is something for everyone. If you're a foodie, be sure to try the Ghentse Neuzekes or Ghent Noses. These cone-shaped sweets have a pleasant raspberry flavor and are sold in most local markets or in specialized stores.

It is quite easy to get to Ghent from key Belgian transportation hubs. By rail, the journey from Brussels takes only 25-30 minutes, and from Bruges - about 30 minutes.
