"20 Days in Mariupol" is in the running for an Oscar
On the night of March 10-11, the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles will host the 96th Academy Awards. Among the contenders for the golden statuette in the Best Documentary category is the Ukrainian film "20 Days in Mariupol" by director and war journalist Mstyslav Chernov. Bookmakers have assessed the chances of the film winning the award, which is about the first days of the terrorist Russian invasion of the city in Donetsk region.
The Oddschecker service collected data from more than 20 bookmakers to find out which of the films analysts predict to win. "20 Days in Mariupol" is at the top of the list.
More than 50% of all bookmakers' bets were on the Ukrainian documentary.
Other competitors of our film were ranked in the following order:
– "Four Daughters" (France, Tunisia, Germany and Saudi Arabia)
– "Bobi Wine: The People's President" (Uganda, Great Britain and the USA)
– "The Eternal Memory" (Chile)
– "To Kill a Tiger" (Canada)
It should be noted that together with Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko worked on the film.
The film tells the story of the beginning of a full-scale war in Mariupol with all its horrors: the bombing of residential buildings and a maternity hospital, constant shelling, and civilian deaths. And how ordinary Mariupol residents reacted to it. "20 Days in Mariupol" became the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine.
OBOZ.UA also wrote that 20 Days in Mariupol has already won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary. The film's director, Mstyslav Chernov, and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko, who worked with him and photojournalist Yevhen Malolhetka in the besieged Mariupol in 2022, took to the stage to receive the award. The main winner of the evening was the film Oppenheimer.
