One of the oldest cities in Europe: what Spanish Cadiz offers tourists
Cadiz is a true gem of Spain, combining centuries of history, impressive architecture and vibrant Andalusian flavor. It is the oldest city in Europe, founded by the Phoenicians in 1100 BC. For centuries, Cadiz was an important trading center for the Carthaginians, Romans, and Muslims.
Cadiz is a warm and sunny city. Even in winter, the temperature remains comfortable between 17 and 24°C, making it a great place to escape the cold. And thanks to the fact that Cadiz is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, there is always a pleasant sea breeze, even on the hottest summer days. The Express magazine told us why it is worth visiting Cadiz.
The old town fascinates with its narrow streets, medieval buildings and majestic cathedrals. The local cathedral with its stunning dome, the Roman theater, which is one of the oldest in Spain, and San Sebastian Castle, which stands right on the oceanfront, are all worth a visit.
If you love the sea, Cadiz will not disappoint:
- Playa de la Victoria is one of the best urban beaches in Europe, with white sand, bars and restaurants along the coast.
- La Caleta is a charming little beach in the heart of the old town, surrounded by historic fortresses.
- Playa de los Alejandros is an ideal place for surfing and water sports.
Carnival in Cadiz is one of the most fun and colorful in Spain. It lasts for more than two weeks and is filled with music, costume parades, and an incredible holiday atmosphere. If you want to feel the real Andalusian spirit, visit Cadiz during the carnival.
Andalusian cuisine is famous for its seafood. In Cadiz, you can taste authentic Spanish tapas, fresh seafood and traditional dishes such as tortilla de camarones (thin pancakes with shrimp). A glass of local sherry will be the perfect complement to any meal.
Unlike Madrid or Barcelona, Cadiz is not as popular among tourists, so it has much more affordable prices. Housing here is cheaper than in many other Spanish cities.
