The Podil fire of 1811 was one of the most powerful and catastrophic in the history of Kyiv. According to archival data, 1176 houses and 11 churches burned down.

The story of the incident was published on his Telegram channel by Kyrylo Stepanets, a Kyiv guide. The fire raged in the old city on July 9-11.

"Fire in Podil in 1811. In the summer of 1811, one of the largest fires in the history of the capital broke out. In a few hours, the flames covered a huge area. Due to the heat, it was extremely difficult to extinguish the flames, and the fire engulfed Volodymyrsky Descent and reached the Klovsky Palace (Kyiv First Gymnasium)," Stepanets said.

According to the guide, the streets of Podil were completely destroyed by fire, both wooden and stone buildings were damaged. According to archival data, 1176 houses and 11 churches burned down.

Only a few buildings survived the fire, such as the so-called Petro's house, the so-called Mazepa's house, Rybalsky's house, Nazariy Sukhota's house, the first floor of the Kontraktovy house, and some churches.

In 1955, Ukrainian documentary photographer Andriy Levchenko took several panoramic photos of Podil and the Dnipro River. Thanks to these works, you can see what this historic area of Kyiv looked like back then.
