On the Moon they want to build "street lamps": they will be taller than the Statue of Liberty

Scientists specializing in astronomy want to turn the Moon into the first extraterrestrial object where conditions for human habitation will be created. The most important factor that will be the basis for a comfortable existence, scientists consider lighting. Participants of the American project LUNARSABER plan to install on the satellite of our planet lanterns that will be higher than the Statue of Liberty.

The creation of these objects plays an important role in the future development of the space body, because one day on the Moon is equivalent to two weeks on Earth, reports Live Science. Such a difference in time is also characteristic of the nights of the celestial object, the low temperature of which poses a threat to researchers.

Scientists plan to develop lanterns 100 meters high that will be both a light source and solar panels. The LUNARSABER representative office explains: the massive poles will be able to accumulate radiation from the central star of our planetary system during the lunar day, which will be turned into energy to illuminate the area at night. The source of light will be giant spotlights.

Astronomers noted that the height of the future lanterns is important not only for the ability to explore a large amount of territory, but also to securely hold cameras and communication devices. Each site will be equipped with power adapters that will be used for potential infrastructure, and could later become the first electrical grid on the moon.

Although the project is in the early stages of development, engineers have created an automated system by which each lantern will independently reach the required height thanks to a coiled band of cylindrical tubes.
