The city of Cherkasy is a mysterious corner of Ukraine that hides many historical secrets. Its origin and development are associated with several unique events and legends. Today, Cherkasy is known as a modern city, but its roots go back to ancient times when military and cultural traditions flourished here.

Old photographs of Cherkasy taken from the heights of the last century have been posted online. They were published by Cherkasy local historian Borys Yukhno on his Facebook page. OBOZ.UA offers to view old photos of Cherkasy and learn more about the city's history.

The origin of the name Cherkasy

One version says that the name of the city comes from the Ossetian word "cherkasogi," which appeared during the Mongol invasion. Another theory connects it with the Turkic expression "čiri kişi," which means "people of strength." A third variant of the name's origin suggests a connection with the tribe of "chern yasy" that lived in the territory of the Dnipro region in Kyivan Rus.

Foundation of the city of Cherkasy

The first documentary mention of Cherkasy dates back to 1284. According to the historian Ivan Boltin, the city was founded by immigrants who fled Mongol pressure. It is known that by 1303, Cherkasy had already become a well-fortified settlement that played an important role in protecting Kyiv lands.

Cherkasy played a crucial role in the development of the Cossacks. In the 15th century, it became one of the first centers of the Cossack movement. During Bohdan Khmelnytskyi's National Liberation War, the city served as a base for Colonel Maksym Kryvonos. Cherkasy residents have repeatedly demonstrated heroism in the fight against the invaders, defending their freedom.

In the Middle Ages, Cherkasy had two wooden castles to protect it from enemies. The oldest of them was located near the modern city center. The castle was small in size but could accommodate all the inhabitants during a siege. The second castle, built later, was larger and became an even stronger fortress.

In the nineteenth century, Cherkasy began to change. The architect William Heste developed a plan for the city with rectangular blocks that gave it a modern look. Later, Art Nouveau buildings appeared, including the Maiboroda and Shcherbyna estates, which became examples of early 20th-century architectural excellence.

Since the second half of the 19th century, industry has been actively developing in Cherkasy. The city became an important center with sugar mills, sawmills, and factories. Its favorable location on the banks of the Dnipro River fostered trade and economic growth.

Cherkasy has repeatedly been the center of uprisings, such as the Koliivshchyna in the 18th century. The city was home to groups of brave fighters who defended the rights and freedom of the people. Thanks to its history, Cherkasy remains a symbol of the struggle for justice.

Today, Cherkasy is a modern city with a rich history and cultural heritage. It attracts tourists with its architectural monuments, including castle ruins and old houses. Cherkasy continues to preserve its unique character, which has been formed over the centuries.
