Not all tourists know this: one of the largest islands in Greece has truly impressive beaches and healing springs

Greece has about 6000 islands, and the largest and one of the most famous is Crete. The second largest after Crete is the island of Euboea, located at a distance of 80 km and stretching along the northern coast of Attica.

Despite its relative proximity to the capital, you are unlikely to find crowds of tourists on Euboea. It is a real gem for those looking for clean beaches, warm weather, and unity with nature. The Sun magazine told us about one of the largest islands in Greece, which impresses with its coastline and healing springs.

The island is 180 km long, 7 km wide at its narrowest point and 50 km wide at its widest. The total length of the coastline is an incredible 680 km.

Euboea is a very picturesque island. In addition to beaches and bays, there are also mountainous areas, and the highest mountain Dirfi reaches a height of 1749 meters.

The island is very close to the Greek mainland and is connected to it by a bridge across the Euripus Strait. The Strait is unique in that every six hours the fast current stops and then starts moving again, each time in the opposite direction. Experts say that the changing movement of water has been going on continuously for thousands of years.

There are many beaches on the island, but one of the most beautiful is Kalamos, a secluded bay on the eastern side of the island with clear blue water, sun loungers, pleasant music and restaurants.

In addition, there is Chiliadou beach, located near the Dirfi mountain reserves.

Aidipsos is known for its thermal springs, which are said to have healing properties and can help with many diseases, such as arthritis.

For those who like to enjoy nature, the Dimosari Gorge offers stunning views with waterfalls, rocky gorges and lush green slopes.

The best way to enjoy the view is by hiking. The most hardy can tackle the 10-kilometer paved trail from Petrokannalo col to Kallianos Beach. The trail is shaded by trees, and you can cool off in the natural creek.

The Red Castle is another popular attraction on the island. Built between 1209 and 1216 by Baron Ravanus dalle Carceri on the ruins of Byzantine foundations, the castle was named after the red stone used to build it. The castle has been the site of many battles, including during the Greek Revolution of 1821. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the town of Karystos.

It was on the island of Euboea that archaeologists found the ruins of the temple of Artemis, which they had been searching for for centuries. The sanctuary is located at the foot of the Castello Rosso hill, near the fishing village of Amarantos.

The main reason why Euboea is not as popular as Crete is the lack of an airport. The best way to get to the island is to take a ferry from Rafina to Marmara or Karystos or cross the bridge in Chalkida.
