New disaster movie "Tornadoes" has a great start in theaters: trailer
The sequel to the 1996 disaster film Smerch, The Tornadoes, has been released in Ukraine and worldwide. And the filmmakers can already talk about the box office success of their brainchild.
The film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glenn Powell, and Anthony Ramos grossed $123.2 million in its first weekend, Variety reports. Of this amount, $80.5 million was grossed in the US market. Most of the money from other countries came from the UK ($5.5 million), Mexico ($2.5 million), Australia ($2 million) and France ($1.9 million). At the same time, the launch of The Tornado in China can be considered a failure, with a miserable $2.2 million in the first weekend.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the authors can already hope that the film will pay off. The Tornadoes cost $155 million to produce and has not yet been released in Japan and Korea, where audiences are particularly fond of this genre.
In the plot of the disaster movie, directed by Lee Isaac Chang, the daughter of the main characters of the original "Tornado" Kate Cooper also becomes a tornado hunter. Together with her colleagues, she finds herself in central Oklahoma when a natural disaster unfolds overhead - numerous tornadoes are passing through the state.
Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Jarvie (Anthony Ramos), as professional meteorologists, are trying to test a new hurricane forecasting system. But their new friend Tyler (Glen Powell) is a blogger who shoots dangerous videos for YouTube from the center of natural disasters. Tyler has an entire team working for him, traveling in a specially prepared vehicle. In the face of the elements, such different characters have to join forces.
The original Tornado, starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, was about a group of scientists trying to defeat the most powerful tornado in decades. In 1996, it became a big hit, grossing nearly $500 million at the global box office. This earned the disaster movie second place in the list of box office breakthroughs of that year and two Oscar nominations - Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
