Flood in Kyiv in 1979

In 1979, a flood literally turned the capital's Podil district into an Italian Venice. As a result of the rising water level in the Dnipro River, the streets near the Taras Shevchenko metro station became canals, through which cars "swam."

Old photos from that period were published in the community Native Kyivan Club on Facebook. You can see the consequences of the disaster that raged 45 years ago.

"Obolonska Street in Podil. 1979. As you can see from these photos, flooding is quite a common phenomenon that occurs periodically and then quickly passes. No mysticism," the post says.

The published photos show the aftermath of the disaster that raged in those days. In particular, you can see that the street near the Taras Shevchenko metro station has literally gone underwater. People are walking along it knee-deep in water, and the cars trying to overcome the "obstacle" look more like Venetian gondolas.
