NASA astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore, who is stuck in space, said he heard "strange sounds" coming from the Boeing Starliner capsule. This is problematic because the capsule is scheduled to leave the International Space Station (ISS) in a few days and return to Earth on autopilot.

Wilmore radioed mission control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston to report an unknown noise. In the audio recording of the conversation, the astronaut holds the phone up to the speakers so that flight control can hear the sound he was referring to, the New York Post writes.

"It was kind of a pulsed noise, almost like a sonar sound," the recording says in Mission Control.

"I'm going to do it again and let you all scratch the back of your heads and see if you can figure out what's going on," Barry Wilmore told the mission control team as he played the sound again.

The strange sound was first reported by Ars Technica, which cited a recording first made and distributed by Michigan meteorologist Rob Dale.

The Mission Control and Boeing cannot yet say what the sound is, but will try to find out.

Earlier, NASA reported that if everything goes according to plan, the Starliner will undock from the International Space Station at 18:04 EST on September 6. The landing will take place six hours later at White Sands Spaceport in New Mexico. However, the capsule will return without a crew due to its malfunction.

As a reminder, Starliner launched on June 5, 2024, on its first-ever crewed mission, delivering NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore to the International Space Station. A day later, the capsule docked, but there were several malfunctions. In particular, the Boeing Starliner suffered several helium leaks, and five of the 28 reaction control system engines failed on the way to the orbital laboratory.

After numerous checks, NASA decided that it was too risky to return the astronauts to the Starliner, as there was no guarantee that the capsule would not malfunction on the way to Earth. Therefore, the agency announced that Williams and Wilmore will return home on the SpaceX Dragon capsule in February 2025. The Starliner capsule will return home without a crew.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote that NASA announced that the Boeing Starliner capsule would return to Earth without a crew no earlier than September 6, provided that the weather conditions are favorable and there are no technical problems.
