Scientists have spotted a mysterious "rogue star" in space. According to scientists, the celestial object is quite large - about 27,000 times larger than Earth.
The star is being carried through the galaxy at a speed of about 2,000,000 km/h, which is almost 1,500 times the speed of sound. This threatens it to leave the Milky Way and fly into intergalactic space, writes Metro.
Scientists have yet to determine exactly what the mysterious object they spotted in space is. But they tentatively consider it a "brown dwarf" - a star that is larger than a planet, but not large enough to support prolonged nuclear fusion like the Sun.
Experts believe the body mass of the unknown object is about 80 times the size of Jupiter, putting it on the borderline between a star and a brown dwarf, sometimes called "losers."
"I can't describe my level of excitement. When I first saw how fast it was moving, I was convinced that it had apparently already been reported," German scientist Martin Kabatnik shared his impressions.
According to the researchers, it is not known exactly what made this mysterious object fly into space at such hypersonic speed. Scientists speculate that it may have flown out of its solar system after a neighboring "white dwarf" star died and collapsed on itself, causing a powerful nuclear reaction.
Another theory is that this celestial body called CWISE J1249 broke free from the force of a black hole, forcing it into outer space.
"When a star collides with a double black hole system, the complex dynamics of the three-body interaction can throw that star right out of the globular cluster," explained NASA astronomer Dr. Kyle Kremer.
"This star joins a collection of 'hypervelocity' stars that have been found over the past few decades, most of which are thousands of light-years away from the Sun, while this source is only 400 light-years away. This discovery provides a new way to study brown dwarfs, which are located in remote regions of the Milky Way," - summarized the finding of the head of the research team Adam Burgasser.
