Movie of the year or a big disappointment? Premiere of "Joker. Madness for Two" in Venice divided critics

The premiere of the long-awaited sequel about one of the most famous villains of Gotham "Joker: Madness for Two" took place on September 4 at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The much-hyped thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga began to be discussed even before its official release on the big screens.

It is assumed that the talk around the sequel to "The Joker" became even louder after the screening in Venice. And although the vast majority of critics decided to remain silent until the world premiere of the movie, some still expressed their opinions, writes ComicBook Movie.

Specifically, reviews of "Joker: Madness for Two" have appeared on the Letterboxd platform. One viewer noted that "the movie's message is poignant and devastating," but the film "lacks emotion" and "seems to be just a response to those people who thought the first movie was an ode to violence."

Another critic assures that "the musical aspect feels like a gimmick and [becomes] boring over time," while a third user describes the strip as "a confusing mess that aspires to be everything and ends up being nothing." Finally, another writer calls the new Joker "a huge disappointment."

In contrast, the reaction on social media is much more positive. For example, the JoBlo portal named it "movie of the year." If these mixed reviews tell us anything, it's that "Joker: Madness for Two" is unlikely to be a critical favorite. The first "Joker" only has a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it received 11 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards - the most of any film at the ceremony - as well as wins for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Music for Hildur Gunnadottir. The official premiere of the second part of the film in Ukraine and worldwide is scheduled for October 3, 2024.
