Kyiv Central Railway Station today

Kyiv's first Central Railway Station was built in the second half of the 19th century. In 1869, an unknown photographer took a picture of the construction process.

The unique photo was published on social media. Unfortunately, it has not survived to this day.

"Construction of the first Kyiv railway station. 1869," the post reads.

In the photo, we can see what the first building of Kyiv's main gate looked like – a majestic medieval castle with towers.

Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi is an out-of-class passenger railway station of the Southwestern Railway, the main railway station of Kyiv.

It is part of the Kyiv railway junction. The Kyiv railway station was built in 1868-1870 to serve the Kyiv – Balta and Kyiv – Kursk railways, which were completed in 1870. The station was then located in the valley of the Lybid River, on the site of soldiers' houses.

As a reminder, the "Lvivska Brama" ghost station of the Syretsko-Pecherska metro line in Kyiv is one of the most popular destinations for urban diggers and extreme tourism enthusiasts. The unfinished facility of the Kyiv subway is shrouded in mystery and legends.

Until 1979, one of the forgotten symbols of old Kyiv could be seen in the place where the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people is located today. The Elephant Fountain managed to survive the Second World War, but not the Soviet regime.
