Manicure lasts longer and is not so harmful: what are polygel nails and why you should not do them at home

Fashion salons all over the world are abandoning the usual gel, powder, or acrylic nail extensions in favor of polygel, a new hybrid technique. According to the nail technicians, it allows you to make your manicure less bulky and harmful, but at the same time maintain durability.

The editors of Real Simple turned to the leading nail service masters to find out why polygel has become so popular and whether it can be done at home.

"Polygel is considered a hybrid formula that combines the durability of acrylic and the elasticity of a gel for extensions," explained Syreeta Aaron, an expert at LECHAT Nails.

It is usually packaged in tubes similar to toothpaste. Polygel has a harder consistency than gel, is easy to adjust to the desired shape and length, and dries quickly in the lamp.

According to the nail technician, there are two methods commonly used for applying polygel nails. One of them involves applying the product in a flexible mold, where it is distributed and then pressed against the natural nail until it dries under a lamp, and the other is applying the polygel directly to the nail, where the shape and length are already formed with a brush.

One of the advantages of polygel is that it is not harmful to inhale, unlike acrylic. Another plus is that polygel stays soft longer and dries only when exposed to ultraviolet light.

A polygel manicure lasts about three weeks, and it doesn't need to be cut off. If the mold has no defects, the gel can be renewed. Due to its harder consistency, it lasts a little longer.

Although there is nothing too complicated about applying polygel, nail technicians do not recommend doing it at home. Amateurs in the field of nail service may not understand the quality of the product or damage the nail plate with improper application and preparation.
