Like Mallorca, but without tourists: an island off the coast of France promises a relaxing vacation
When it comes to planning a vacation, many of us are looking for the perfect place to relax. Someplace where you can forget about all your worries and enjoy nature and culture.
However, popular destinations are usually crowded with tourists, so experienced travelers look for quieter locations. One of them was described by Express.
A few kilometers off the French coast of Pays de la Loire, there is a small continental island called L'Ile d'Yeu. It is only 10 km long and has a population of 5,000. It is incredibly beautiful and picturesque, so it is often even called a "mini-Majorca", but without huge crowds of tourists.
The island is known for its picturesque coastline, reminiscent of the Celtic landscapes of Scotland, as well as its rich cultural heritage dating back to prehistoric times. It is also part of the private association of the Ponant Islands, which includes 15 inhabited islands on France's Atlantic coast and canals. It aims to promote economic, cultural, and tourist development while ensuring the preservation of the territory.
To get to L'Ile d'Yeu, you can use a ferry, helicopter, or airplane. For example, the Fromentin-Port Joanville ferry operates year-round, while additional ferries from Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie operate from April to September, and Barbatra, Noirmoutier – in summer.
Ferries arrive in Port Joinville on the north coast of the island, so most trips start there. After disembarking, you will be greeted by a marina full of fishing boats and traditional whitewashed houses.
As you walk around the town, you will probably want to visit the local authentic dining establishments. Some of them serve the classic Patagos dish. These are delicious clams served in a rich creamy parsley and garlic sauce. At the same time, "tarte aux pruneaux" – a sweet prune cake, once known as "wedding cake" – is a traditional dessert that can be found all over the island.
The island of L'lle d'Yeu also offers a lot of entertainment. You can enjoy a pleasant walk by the sea, picturesque beaches, or numerous jogging trails. It is also worth visiting Le Vieux Château, a 14th-century fortress built at the beginning of the Hundred Years' War. A guided tour provides stunning views and insight into the island's history.
