LG Display has made a significant step forward in the development of flexible display technology by unveiling the world's first prototype of an elastic screen. The unique innovation allows the display to expand from 12 to 18 inches without losing image quality.

This discovery marks a new era in the creation of screens that can adapt to different shapes without being limited to traditional flexibility characteristics. From now on, flexible displays will be able to serve in a wide variety of fields, from fashion to the automotive industry, the company said in a press release.

Although LG Display has already experimented with elastic screens in 2022, the then model could only expand by 20%. The new prototype has surpassed previous developments, achieving a 50% extension through the use of innovative materials and technical solutions.

Next-generation technology

Unlike flexible displays that only bend or fold, this screen can not only stretch, but also reshape, twist, and adapt to curves. That's why LG calls its development the "ultimate display technology." This level of adaptability will allow the display to be used in a wide range of innovative products.

The development of this display is part of a large-scale project funded by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. LG Display joined forces with 19 research institutes to develop the technologies needed to realize the elastic screen.

A new generation of materials

An important innovation was a new silicon substrate material, which is commonly used in contact lenses. It allows the display to retain its shape even under significant stretching. In addition, the LG team uses advanced wiring methods to ensure the reliability of the device under regular stretching.

Durability and longevity

The display can withstand over 10,000 stretch cycles, making it extremely durable. A micro-LED measuring only 40 micrometers is used to illuminate the screen, which ensures consistent image quality even in extreme conditions.

Practical applications

At the presentation, LG demonstrated the capabilities of the new display, including its use in a curved car display that responds to touch and gestures, as well as a display integrated into firefighters' uniforms that provides access to real-time information.

For clothing and fashion accessories

In addition to the automotive industry, LG Display is exploring opportunities in the fashion industry. Due to its thinness and lightness, the screen can be attached to curved surfaces such as fabric or leather, which opens up prospects for creating "smart" clothing.
