Kevin's mom from Home Alone on the "awful" phrase she had a hard time saying to young Macaulay Culkin

The annual watching of Home Alone before the New Year has become a tradition for Ukrainian families. It was painful for everyone when, at the beginning of the first movie, in the scene where Kevin is forced to sleep in the attic, he tells his mother that he doesn't want to see her for the rest of his life. For the actress Catherine O'Hara, the mother's response was harsh and terrifying. In the movie, she tells her son to repeat his wish to make it come true.

Catherine O'Hara shared her thoughts while giving a speech about Macaulay Culkin at the unveiling ceremony of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on December 1, the Independent reports. The actress played the role of Kate McCallister, Kevin's mother.

When Katherine sends her son to sleep in the attic as punishment for misbehavior, she says she doesn't want to see him "for the rest of the night," to which Kevin responds, "I don't want to see you again for the rest of my whole life. And I don't want to see anybody else either."

His mother replied that she hoped Kevin was not telling the truth and that if his family disappeared in the morning, he would be very sorry. In response, she received a refusal from her son, "Not at all."

It was her next line that was difficult to say because O'Hara believes it "killed" her:

"Then say it again. Maybe it will happen"

The actress commented on this as follows, "I can't tell you how much it killed me. I couldn't think of saying something so horrible to this beautiful child. Of course, at that time I was not a mother yt, and I had no idea that such a thing could come out of my own mouth to my two sons."

During her speech, Catherine also addressed the audience,

"Home Alone has been, is and always will be a global favorite. The reason why families all over the world can't go a year without watching Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin. Yes, he had a great script and a great director. But it was Macaulay's perfect performance as Kevin McCallister that allowed every little boy to get into an extraordinary adventure."
