Keeping distance is important: how to plant thujas the right way
When creating a landscape design for a garden or our own plot, we often pay attention to thujas first. These conifers are quite hardy, do not require complicated maintenance, and can form a beautiful hedge.
However, it is still important to follow certain planting and care rules to ensure their health and appearance. OBOZ.UA asked experienced gardeners for advice.
Since thuja is a great choice for forming a green fence, owners of private plots often think to plant these conifers strictly around the perimeter. But you shouldn't do this. Over time (and quite quickly), the crown and root system of thuja grow, which means that the branches will begin to protrude beyond the required limits, and the roots can end up under the foundations of buildings or enter someone else's territory.

Therefore, when you plant thuja on your land, always leave 50 cm, and preferably 1 meter, from the trunk. This will give the tree room to grow. In addition, a plant that does not lack space will grow straight and not deform, and it will be less likely to need to be pruned.
Planting a thuja too close to the fence also creates difficulties in care. The branches will have to be pruned more often. Which can be a problem if reach the neighbor's territory. Similarly, thuja located too close to the edge can create unwanted shade for other garden plants - this should also be taken into account.
It is equally important to leave space between the thujas that you want to use as a hedge. In this case, the plants should be at a distance of one meter from each other. This will help them grow well and at the same time form a dense row.
