According to astronomers, Jupiter "reaches opposition" approximately every 13 months and orbits the Sun in 12 Earth years. This means that in 1 year, it travels only 1/12th of its way.

Instead, it takes the Earth a whole year to complete a revolution around the Sun. That is, our planet needs to go another 1/12th of the way around the Sun to catch up with Jupiter, scientists say.

Scientists emphasize that every 13 months the Earth "slides" between the Sun and Jupiter. This is how planetary opposition occurs.
