"I’ve never seen so many teeth on any animal": an unusual creature washed up on Canadian coast. Photo
An unusual creature was found on the coast of British Columbia (a province of Canada on the Pacific coast). A strange creature with dozens of teeth confused researchers.
The discovery was made by Kendra Luckow, who works as an environmentalist in the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve near the southern tip of Vancouver Island. The woman admitted that the ocean had brought various creatures to the coast before, but she had "never seen so many teeth on any animal," Vancouver Is Awesome writes.
"I'm on a rock in the middle of the ocean. On any given day, seagulls and other birds drop plenty of surprises for me," said Kendra Luckow.
But during her last walk, she came across something very strange: an unknown creature with dozens of teeth. "I have never seen so many teeth on any animal - ever. This is probably up there as far as odd things go," the researcher said.
After taking a bunch of photos of the unknown creature, Kendra shared them on Facebook so that experts could identify it. Her post in the Field Naturalists of Vancouver Island group on the network gathered more than 200 comments.
Many people joked that the creature "looks like the Alien." Some called it a lingcod.
As for the serious options, Maria Cornthwaite, head of the Canadian Fisheries and Oceans' groundfish data division, said the image, which shows teeth and a wrinkled body, doesn't allow them to say exactly what kind of fish it is, "I think this one would be difficult even if we had the specimen, as it didn’t look like there was much left of the head or body."
Examining the teeth, Cornthwaite said it could have been a ghost grenadier, a deep-sea group of rat-tailed fish that the researcher sometimes saw while exploring the British Columbia coast. These fish usually have bands of teeth rather than two separate rows.
